(Mankato, MN) – 2018 is on pace to be a record year for the number of so-called “robocalls” across Southern Minnesota.
According to YouMail, there have been more than 21-million robocalls in the 507 area code so far this year. The number is on pace to break last year’s record of more than 27-million.
Some of the robocalls are legitimate, such as pharmacies notifying patients when they can pick up a prescription, but the vast majority are recorded messages from both spammers and scammers.
Recent activity in the 507 has included robocalls on pre-approved loans, health insurance, carpet cleaning and car warranties.
In Minnesota, robocalls are illegal, unless the subscriber has knowingly or voluntarily requested, consented to, permitted, or authorized receipt of the message; or the message is immediately preceded by a live operator who first obtains the subscriber’s consent.
Nationally, 4.1-billion robocalls were placed in June alone, equaling nearly 13 calls per person affected.
