(Mankato, MN) – For the second straight month, the jobless figure in the Mankato/North Mankato MSA* has risen.
The unemployment rate for January was 3.2%, meaning about 2,000 people are currently looking for work. The jobless figure was 2.5% in December and 1.9% in the month before that. The spike is common for this time of year, with help that companies brought on for the holidays no longer needed.
When looking at the numbers broken down by larger cities in the area, the unemployment rates for January are:
Fairmont – 4.2%
Faribault – 4.6%
Mankato – 2.9%
North Mankato – 2.6%
New Ulm – 4.3%
Owatonna – 3.8%
Waseca – 6.9%
The jobless figure for Waseca is the highest it’s been since March of 2014, reflecting the recent closing of Quad Graphics, which was the city’s largest employer.
*The Mankato/North Mankato MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) includes all of Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties.
