(North Mankato, MN) – North Mankato is moving forward with an ordinance to raise the tobacco purchase age to 21.
The City Council last night voted to implement the law as of January 1st, 2019. Council Member Pete Steiner was the lone vote against.
When the ordinance was first passed last month, it was with the thought that it would only be implemented if Mankato did as well, but the Council has now decided to push ahead regardless.
The Mankato City Council rejected a similar Tobacco 21 proposal on a 4-3 vote last month. A bill to raise the age across Minnesota has been introduced at the State Capitol.
With the higher tobacco purchase age, North Mankato will join Edina, St. Louis Park, Bloomington and Plymouth.
