Speed Limit Change Starts at Sign, Not on Sight

Knutson Leader Injury 2 New

(Mankato, MN) – While many motorists hit the gas when they see the sign for a faster speed limit on the road ahead, but the law says you actually have to wait until your reach the sign.

“ASK A TROOPER” by Sgt. Troy Christianson of the Minnesota State Patrol

Question: When the speed limit changes on a road, does the new speed limit start at the sign, or does it start when you can see the sign?

Answer: The speed zone becomes effective when you reach the sign. If the speed limit reduces, you must slow down before the sign. If the speed limit increases, you must wait until you reach the new speed limit sign before increasing your speed.

Each year, illegal or unsafe speed is a leading contributing factor in Minnesota fatal crashes, including nearly 90 deaths last year. To continue educating the public on the dangers of speed, law enforcement across Minnesota is conducting extra speed patrols now through July 22nd.
